CoSTAR Live Lab

Active

Description

CoSTAR Live Lab is a research and development facility for live performance, based at Production Park near Wakefield and led by the University of York. It develops new technologies that shape storytelling and audience experiences across film, theatre, live events and hybrid and virtual performance. Its research and development spans spatial and immersive audio, virtual production including LED volumes, motion capture, volumetric capture, extended reality (XR) and virtual reality, real-time and video-game technologies, interactive and mixed-reality content, and biometric data capture, developed directly in response to industry needs. The Lab works to accelerate convergent technologies for stage, screen and beyond, to support the commercialisation of research that is close to market, and to incubate startups and high-growth small and medium enterprises in the creative industries. It also runs an access programme and funding calls for businesses, technologists and creatives. CoSTAR Live Lab is part of the CoSTAR Network, a national network of research and development labs for the creative industries funded through UK Research and Innovation's Infrastructure Fund and delivered by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The facility opened at Production Park in February 2025.
