Animating Text Newcastle University (ATNU)

Active

Description

Animating Text Newcastle University (ATNU) is a digital collaboration at Newcastle University between scholarly editors working in humanities disciplines and the university's Digital Institute. Founded in 2017, it explores the crossroads between traditional scholarly textual editing, digital editing, digital humanities and computer science, bringing together text-based humanities scholars, computing scientists and software engineers. Working from printed and manuscript texts of the past (roughly 1500 to 1900), it develops new ways for readers to interact with texts and tests opportunities for immersive reading and writing, aiming to explain the complex life of texts over time and through space. Its activity includes producing digital scholarly editions, encoding texts to Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) standards, network and data visualisation, and exploratory work on machine learning for computational literary research. ATNU has hosted funded work including Manuscripts after Print, an AHRC-funded study of the production and readership of handwritten books after the invention of print (2019 to 2020), alongside pilot projects such as Transatlantic Intellectual Networks, Soundscapes of Text and the Sarum Hymnal. It runs a virtual speaker series on digital editing and textual scholarship, held with the Institute of English Studies, and contributes to the teaching of digital humanities methods to students across Newcastle University.
