CoSTAR Realtime Lab

Description

The CoSTAR Realtime Lab is a real-time technologies and virtual production research and development facility led by Abertay University and operated in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. Based at Water's Edge in Dundee, with a further studio in Edinburgh, it uses creative technology to develop products, services and companies for the video games, animation, film and television industries, building on Scotland's games and screen sector. The lab houses commercial-capable virtual production studios fitted with large LED volumes (including a 15 by 3 metre AOTO LED screen in Dundee and a 5 by 3 metre screen in Edinburgh), VICON motion capture systems, real-time rendering and camera-tracking infrastructure. It gives creative technology companies access to these facilities together with funding and technical and creative expertise through funded research and development access programmes, such as Realtime Performance and Scene Intelligence, and it runs training activity including The Big Real virtual production film academy for early-career filmmakers. Industry and knowledge-exchange partners include Chroma Developments, CodeBase and Interface. The lab is one of five labs in the CoSTAR Network and is funded by the UK Research and Innovation Infrastructure Fund, delivered through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
