Description

The Centre for Digital Trust and Society is a cross-University research centre at the University of Manchester that acts as a focal point for research on trust and security in the digital world. Led by the Faculty of Humanities and based in the School of Social Sciences, within the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research, it pursues an interdisciplinary agenda that treats digital security as part of broader questions of trust, trustworthiness, distrust, trust exploitation and resilience. Its members come from all three University faculties and include humanities scholars, philosophers, social and behavioural scientists, criminologists, computer scientists and engineers, data scientists and mathematicians. Research is organised into eight clusters: AI Trust and Security; Behavioural Science Research in Security; Digital Technologies and Crime; Trusted Digital Systems; Workplace and Organisational Security; Democracy and Trust; Privacy and Trust; and Advanced Mathematics. Its arts and humanities contribution runs through work on the ethics and philosophy of artificial intelligence and trustworthiness, the politics of democracy and trust, media and misinformation, and the legal and regulatory dimensions of privacy and data. The Centre runs an annual seedcorn funding competition, a guest seminar series and an annual forum, and contributes to teaching, including a University College interdisciplinary unit open to students from any discipline. It works closely with the University's Digital Futures network.
