Digital Futures
Description
The Digital Futures network, operating across the University's digital research, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of research activities to external stakeholders and foster collaboration among research communities. Themes are utilised to group research capabilities and challenges, acknowledging the interconnectedness and shared involvement of academics across multiple themes. Each theme is led by a senior academic, working together as part of the Management Board to oversee Digital Futures and explore opportunities. Strategic guidance is provided by the Strategic Advisory Board.
The network focuses on two types of challenges: Societal Challenges, which address economically and socially significant real-world activities, and Institutional Challenges, which examine the transformative potential of digital technology within the University's operations, including research, teaching, and organisational functioning. Cross-cutting Capabilities encompass the digital frameworks, technologies, and methods that are essential areas of research and form the foundation for addressing the challenges. To support the network of over 1,700 researchers involved in digital research at The University of Manchester, Digital Futures fosters communities around multidisciplinary themes and establishes relationships with external organisations and partners. This support is facilitated through various means, including internal and external events, communications, assistance with research funding applications, and scoping activities.
Internal events provide researchers with the opportunity to share findings, explore cross-disciplinary learning, and engage with emerging opportunities. External events are tailored to promote the University's digital activities, enabling researchers to establish new connections and collaborations. Effective communication channels disseminate relevant news, events, and funding opportunities to both internal and external communities. Researchers are also assisted in preparing interdisciplinary grant proposals by connecting them with suitable internal and external collaborators. Additionally, scoping activities involve data collection to identify expertise, areas of interest, and gaps or requirements related to the themes, and surveys are available for citizens and democracy, cities and environment, industry 5.0, social media and networks, and createch themes.
