Digital Futures Institute, King's College London
ActiveDescription
The Digital Futures Institute is a research institute at King's College London that works to help people understand what it means to live well with technology. Drawing on approaches from across the SHAPE (arts, humanities and social sciences), STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and Health disciplines, it reframes challenges usually treated as purely technical as human and social ones, examining questions of ethics, bias, transparency and responsibility. Its work spans ensuring coding practices incorporate diversity and ethics, promoting equitable integration of technology, empowering communities, responding to global crises through technology, and learning from how technologies have been received in the past. The Institute brings together expertise from across the university and is organised around four research centres: the Centre for the Ecologies of Attention and Perception, the Centre for Digital Culture, the Centre for Technology and the Body, and the Centre for Data Futures. It supports interdisciplinary research through an annual Fellows scheme, offers postgraduate courses, and runs public engagement and outreach programmes including work with London schools.
