Centre for Technomoral Futures, University of Edinburgh

Active

Description

The Centre for Technomoral Futures is a University-based research centre at the University of Edinburgh, based within the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI). Launched in 2020 as an integral part of the University of Edinburgh's Futures Institute, the Centre's mission is to unify technical and moral knowledge in new models of research, education, design and engagement that directly serve the goals of sustainable, just and ethical innovation. Its guiding premise is that, to build and sustain futures worth wanting, the human family must close the gap between technology and moral wisdom. The Centre's current portfolio of activities, supported by an initial gift from the global investment firm Baillie Gifford, focuses upon the ethical implications of present and future advances in AI, machine learning and other data-driven technologies. Its research is organised across five areas: the Ethics of Algorithms (algorithmic transparency and explainability, bias and discrimination in machine learning, and algorithmic accountability and responsibility); the Ethics of Human-Machine Interactions (including the ethics of automation and of artificial agent and robot design); the Ethics and Politics of Data (dataveillance and data privacy, data justice and data violence, and ethical data science); Emerging Technology and Human Identity; and Emerging Technology, Health and Flourishing. As part of the Edinburgh Futures Institute, the Centre supports EFI's larger aim to support society's navigation of complex futures.
