AI for Public Good, Joseph Rowntree Foundation

Active

Description

AI for public good is a project of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) exploring the potential for AI to be a force for public good and an instrument in the foundation's work to transition to a poverty-free future. Rather than delivering traditional policy programmes, the project positions JRF as an inquisitive explorer leaning into emergent and speculative work, with a stated role of convening relationships and commissioning content that builds and examines new ideas. It aims to make cross-sector connections and bring in the opinions of people who are not always included in conversations around tech; to create and commission content that explores, interrogates and builds new ideas; to examine how to develop and use AI for the public sector and civil society; and to challenge assumptions and raise questions about the moral and ethical limitations of AI and the risk of exploitation. Bringing together a wide range of perspectives, from tech experts and public sector actors to not-for-profit organisations and grassroots groups, the project seeks to broaden and deepen existing AI debates, cutting through the hype of current mainstream narratives and legitimising and involving the voices of non-tech experts, while instigating conversations and building cross-sector connections. Commissioned strands include a collection of essays on AI and the power of narratives, in which creative writers examine how mainstream narratives about AI shape literacy, digital exclusion and public engagement, and commissioned research into the perspectives of not-for-profit and grassroots organisations on generative AI.
