Culture Unstained

Description

Culture Unstained is a research, engagement and campaigning organisation that aims to end fossil fuel sponsorship of culture. It calls on arts and cultural organisations to cut their ties to fossil fuels, with the aim of undermining the social legitimacy that the industry gains from these relationships. A not-for-profit workers' co-operative founded in October 2016, the organisation is a member of the Art Not Oil coalition and part of the international Fossil Free Culture movement. Its research investigates the nature and scale of relationships between fossil fuel companies and UK cultural institutions, examines how those relationships conflict with institutions' values or breach their governance and ethics policies, and collates evidence on the impacts of the fossil fuel companies that sponsor museums and galleries. This research informs campaigning that mobilises networks of cultural, scientific, academic and political figures, brings ethical scrutiny to oil sponsorship deals, and envisions a sustainable arts sector funded without fossil fuels.
