Maslaha
ActiveDescription
Maslaha is a centre for social innovation based in London that takes its name from an Islamic social justice concept calling for ways of living together built on safety, welfare and the avoidance of harm. Translating from Arabic as "for the common good", the centre works in shared struggle with Muslim communities, on the principle that the tools for liberation lie within those communities, finding practical solutions to current challenges while learning from past struggles. It seeks to change and challenge the conditions that create inequalities and racism for Muslim communities across education, gender, criminal justice, health, negative media coverage and a continued climate of Islamophobia. Its work is rooted in practical change, critical learning and public imagination, operating at both local and systemic levels, and it produces award-winning resources by engaging communities, service providers and decision makers. The centre works across education, gender, criminal justice, health and arts and campaigns, using creative tools such as films, photography, zines and exhibitions to influence public imagination and shift narratives around Muslims, with a view to influencing policy.
