The Constitution Society

Active

Description

The Constitution Society is an independent educational foundation, founded in 2009, which works to promote public understanding of the UK constitution and to encourage informed debate between legislators, academics and the public about proposals for constitutional change. It advocates the maintenance of basic constitutional standards and a considered approach to constitutional change, arguing that where change is required legislation should be carefully prepared, with broad consultation and adequate time for scrutiny and debate. The Society monitors current constitutional developments and assesses them against core constitutional principles. Its work includes publishing papers and reports by leading experts on constitutional topics, organising conferences and seminars, carrying out independent research (recent projects have examined the First-Past-the-Post electoral system, the 'good chap' model of government, and the inner workings of British political parties), and running a blog of commentary on topical constitutional issues. The Society provides administrative and research support to the United Kingdom Constitution Monitoring Group and financial support to the United Kingdom Constitutional Law Association. A registered charity, it is entirely independent of any political party and is funded by individual donations and grants from educational trusts and foundations.
