Indigenous Studies Network
Description
In the midst of various global crises, the world is experiencing a new era of globalisation. This has sparked extensive discussions among Indigenous communities and academic circles regarding the concept of indigeneity.
The Indigenous Studies Network aims to critically examine the history and politics surrounding indigeneity, comparing its characteristics across different times and places. Indigeneity encompasses a wide range of issues, including the legacy of colonialism and settler colonialism, interactions with diverse cultures, struggles for land and the environment, local sovereignties, and matters related to cultural, religious, and linguistic revitalisation. By exploring both the unique contexts and shared aspects of these struggles, the objective is to develop conceptual tools that enhance the understanding of indigeneity and its significance in addressing crucial challenges of this era. Described as a manifestation of "rooted cosmopolitanism," indigeneity offers the potential to revive debates initiated by William James on the nature, extent, and value of pluralism.
The intention is to transcend dualities such as coloniser and colonised, resistance and oppression, by adopting decolonial and indigenous methodologies. Through this approach, the goal is to challenge the Eurocentric boundaries of discussions on indigeneity and promote pluralistic thinking on the ground.
