The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH)
Description
TORCH, part of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford, is a hub for intellectual collaboration and cross-disciplinary research projects. The Centre’s funding, training and networks develop research projects and careers, and its engagement activity increases the social impact and understanding of humanities research amongst wider public audiences.
TORCH hosts several research hubs, which are points of synergy for cutting-edge boundary-crossing research on political and cultural questions central to the Humanities:
- Environmental Humanities Research Hub
- Medical Humanities Research Hub
- Race and Resistance Research Hub
- Intersectional Humanities Research Hub
- Performance Research Hub
Since its establishment in 2013, TORCH has additionally supported supported approximately 50 faculty- and student-led research networks. These networks bring together researchers from various career stages, fostering interdisciplinary discussions on cultural, aesthetic, social, and political issues, historical periods, and methodologies. The Networks scheme, which provides support for up to two years, promotes collaborations among scholars in the Humanities Division, as well as the Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, and MPLS Divisions. By cultivating new communities and encouraging expansive modes of thinking, TORCH Networks contribute to addressing significant academic questions across disciplines.
