Childhood and Youth Studies Network (CYS)

Description

The TORCH Childhood and Youth Studies Network (CYS) aims to create a platform for researchers at all career stages who study young lives, representations of childhood and youth, and the politics of age. It operates at the University of Oxford, throughout British universities, and beyond. The network aims to promote Childhood and Youth Studies as a critical interdisciplinary field that explores the role of age in shaping experiences of climate change, race, migration, education, culture, and public health. It highlights how childhood and youth, as simultaneously cherished and marginalised life stages, reveal the factors influencing who is considered important, both in academia and society.

The TORCH Childhood and Youth Studies Network encourages interdisciplinary and cross-regional dialogue by bringing together scholars from various fields such as History, Geography, Education, Area Studies, Modern Languages, Literature, and others. It welcomes participants focused on children and youth, as well as those interested in integrating age into their research or teaching.

Over the next two years, the CYS Network will organise a hybrid series of research seminars, reading groups, pedagogy sessions to enhance the teaching of childhood and youth, an annual lecture, and networking events.
