Besterman Centre for the Enlightenment
Description
The TORCH Enlightenment Programme/Besterman Centre for the Enlightenment, based at the University of Oxford, facilitates and promotes research on the Enlightenment.
It organises interdisciplinary events, bringing together scholars from various fields. The research programme is closely associated with the Voltaire Foundation, which publishes the Œuvres complètes de Voltaire, the correspondence of key figures of the French Enlightenment, and the Oxford University Studies on the Enlightenment (formerly known as Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century - SVEC). The renamed series aims to broaden its interdisciplinary and international scope by publishing innovative studies on the Enlightenment from diverse perspectives. The Programme also maintains strong ties with Electronic Enlightenment, an essential resource for scholars studying the eighteenth century, offering access to an expanding collection of Enlightenment letters. Currently, the Programme's key activities include an annual Besterman Lecture by a guest scholar, an annual conference, and the Enlightenment Workshop, consisting of eight seminars held during Hilary Term each year.
