African Languages, Literatures and Cultures Network
Description
The African Languages, Literatures and Cultures TORCH Network at the University of Oxford provides a platform for interdisciplinary discussions and projects related to African cultures, languages, and literatures. It complements the African Studies Centre and aims to enhance the recognition of African humanities and scholarship in the UK.
The network fosters discussions, debates, and collaborations that transcend language, discipline, and region, going beyond a focus on Anglophone countries and literatures. It brings together various fields such as African intellectual and cultural history, philosophy, performance, film and theatre studies, visual arts, and literature studies, all related to African arts and creativity.
Moreover, the network prioritises African voices, histories, and ways of knowing in current debates on African Studies and academia. Over the next two years, it will organise research seminars, book launches, readings groups (with advance circulated readings), workshops, and conferences open to all. The founding members of the network represent Modern Languages, African Studies, and English Literature, and participants from across the University and beyond are welcome to join.
