The British School at Rome

Description

For 100 years, world-class researchers and contemporary artists have been nurtured at the British School at Rome. We are the bridge between the intellectual and cultural heart of Rome and Italy, and creative and academic researchers from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth. We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds to a stimulating environment of interdisciplinary research and practice where work of the very highest quality is generated and facilitated in a transformative intellectual context. The British School at Rome is one of the eight British International Research Institutes (BIRI).

Every year the British School at Rome offers outstanding scholars and artists the opportunity to join this community and work in Rome for 3 to 9 months. Our highly competitive awards are offered across the BSR’s disciplines in the Fine Arts, Architecture, Archaeology, History and Modern Italian Studies. Award-holders receive accommodation and full board (Monday-Friday) in a study bedroom or artist’s studio. The BSR also hosts long-term fellows funded by the British Academy and other funders.

The British School at Rome is a superb environment for facilitating scholarly exchange. From a small colloquium to a major conference: we have a lecture theatre, meeting rooms, break out space and entertaining areas all enhanced by conference support which truly understands the needs of academics – because that’s what we are.

Many libraries, archives, collections and monuments in Italy are not open to the public. The British School at Rome is often able to gain access for our scholars, artists and residents wanting to visit a closed or restricted site.
