Centre for Mental Health and Society (CFMHAS)
Description
The Centre for Mental Health and Society (CFMHAS) is a research centre that is led by a social scientist and a psychiatrist. The centre's overarching perspective is that mental ill-health can only be understood properly with reference to the social, emotional and physical context in which it arises. CFMHAS has a particular interest in the social determinants of mental illness. Members are mainly concerned with problems that affect deprived and marginalised people across the world.
Members are especially interested in research can have an impact on people’s lives, which means that they are as interested in public health measures as individual level intervention. Much of their work involves mixed (qualitative and quantitive) methods to address complex problems.
The centre's research areas are:
- self-harm and suicide;
- high dose opioid analgesia;
- social care and carers;
- ethics and human rights;
- enduring mental health problems;
- creativity and mental illness;
