NEPN (North East Photography Network)

Description

Established in 2009, NEPN aims to foster photography discussion and development in North East England and beyond. Hosted by the Northern Centre of Photography, University of Sunderland's Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, NEPN works with photographers, artists, curators and cultural partners to stimulate an engaging environment for photography and attract new audiences.

Collaborating with partners, NEPN generates opportunities through commissions, talks, discussion groups, and portfolio review events. Themed symposiums and conferences are curated to spark fresh ideas and inspirations in photography. NEPN also collaborates with established photographic artists, promoting new works and the exchange of ideas. Furthermore, the organisation recognises and nurtures emerging talent, mentoring fledgling photographers through commissioning and advice programmes.

NEPN's key project in 2012/2013 was the conception and execution of the region's inaugural international photography festival, "The Social: Encountering Photography". Since its inception, NEPN has cultivated a broad national and international reputation for its programme, consistently serving as a significant agency for photographers and lens-based artists. Funding for NEPN comes from the University of Sunderland and the initiative has been in receipt of funding from National Lottery through Arts Council England and National Lottery Heritage Fund.   NEPN is currently a partner on a 12 month AHRC Research Networking programme, 'Museum Dialogues' which aims to bring together scholars, archivists, curators, museum workers, and artists from across the globe with a view to developing a comprehensive understanding and exchange of innovative solutions, inquiries, and practical challenges relating to the exhibition, collection and interpretation of photography. The project is led by academic colleagues at Northern Centre of Photography.

NEPN also holds the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence from the Higher Education Academy, in recognition of its efforts in integrating pedagogy and professional practice, and connecting photography students with the wider cultural sector.  NEPN is also a member of the Art Network North East.
