Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI)
Description
The newly created Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) is the centre of digital, data science, and AI research at Queen Mary, bringing together experts from across the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering and the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The Institute creates new knowledge and shares impactful results to support UK leadership in the digital space. Furthermore, it collaborates with academic and industry partners worldwide, hosting regular seminars, workshops and sandpit sessions to foster innovation.
DERI sits within an outstanding ecosystem with strong links to the Alan Turing Institute, the University Enterprise Zone and East London’s Tech City, a vibrant cluster of high-tech companies.
DERI structures its work around named research themes covering Responsible and Trustworthy AI, AI for Biomedicine and Healthcare, Data Science for the Environment and Sustainability, and Emerging AI and Data Science Themes. Within its healthcare research, researchers use computational techniques that include machine learning and harness deep learning techniques for computational photography and medical image computing, alongside neural rendering for 3D digital humans and probabilistic and causal models for decision-support. Its environmental research applies computer vision to geological images, while its drug discovery work develops machine learning, AI and data integration methods for complex biomedical datasets. DERI has also identified emerging themes including generative AI, computational photography and synthetic data, and it hosts the UKRI-funded AI for Drug Discovery doctoral training programme, which provides 27 PhD studentships on multidisciplinary projects combining AI with bioscience.
