The Web Science Institute, based at the University of Southampton, works to create interdisciplinary research collaborations that bring socio-technical insights and solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. 

The institute's key focus is on interdisciplinary AI. We work with global partners across industry, Governments and third sector organisations in data, platform governance, social trust, democratic innovation and technological sustainability to create new knowledge that leads to impact.

Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) is core to our research as well as continuing our position as global leaders in Web Science.

The institute's research themes include:

  • democratic futures;
  • digital futures;
  • data trusts;
  • human-centered artificial intelligence;
  • online health;
  • new forms of knowledge;
  • social and embodied artificial intelligence;
  • trust and artificial intelligence.
