Established in October 2006 with the support of the Xunta de Galicia, the Centre’s aim is to promote and consolidate Galician studies research and teaching in Wales, the UK and internationally, taking advantage of Bangor University’s prominent position in the field of Iberian Studies and Bangor University’s internationally renowned reputation as a research centre in minority languages and cultures, Celtic studies and bilingualism.
The Centre for Galician Studies in Wales has a long standing excellence in teaching and researching Galician studies from multi-disciplinary perspectives. The wide-ranging research activity of the Centre includes studies of Galician literature and politics, women’s writing, comics and banda deseñada, the work of Rosalía de Castro, exile, migration, and translation studies. The Centre has been successful in obtaining external research grants (for example the Arts and Humanities Research Council Research Fellowship) and co-edits the leading open access journal Galicia 21: Journal of Contemporary Galician Studies, in collaboration with The Irish Centre for Galician Studies (University College Cork).
The Centre offers modules on Galician language (both ab initio and intermediate level) and content modules on Galician history and culture from the nineteenth century to the present day. The Centre also contributes teaching and academic supervision to the School of Welsh’ MA programme The Celts and welcomes applications for doctoral projects in any aspect related to Galician studies.
Members of the Centre for Galician Studies in Wales are actively involved with education and cultural organisations and the media in Wales, the UK and internationally.
