Lincoln Theological Institute (LTI)

Description

Established in 1997, the Lincoln Theological Institute for the Study of Religion and Society is a national and international center of expertise in contemporary theological study of religion and society. It promotes research and study on various contemporary ethical, pastoral, social, and ecclesial issues.

Current research topics at LTI include the 'postnatural' turn, climate change approaches, consumerism and ecocriticism, beauty and ecology, love and technologies, public theologies, and inaugurated eschatology. More information on these LTI themes can be found here.

The LTI commissions independent research projects, organises conferences and seminars, and produces reports and publications on various aspects of the sociology of religion, contemporary Christianity, and the relationship between the Church and society. It is located in the Department of Religions and Theology at the University of Manchester.

The theological research conducted by the Lincoln Theological Institute focuses on the following contemporary themes:

  • Place, locality, habitation, and ecology
  • Global threats and powers
  • Religion and civil society
  • Technology, limits, and transformation
  • Power and institutions (including the church)
  • Liberation, political, ecological, postcolonial, and public theologies
  • Culture (including religious cultures) and resources of hope
  • Theologies of education

In 2018, the LTI commemorated its 21 years of ground-breaking research on theology and society by creating a special brochure which can be consulted online on its website.
