Media, Politics and Society Research Group

Description

The Media, Politics and Society research group is a well-established academic community within the Department of Communication and Media, focusing on the relationship between media and politics. The research work in this cluster covers a broad range of areas including media, politics, and society, using diverse analytical, theoretical, and methodological approaches. The research is connected to various research themes in the University of Liverpool, such as Digital Humanities, Slavery and Unfree Labour, Security and Conflict, and Children and Childhood.

The group critically examines media outputs from different perspectives that highlight political agendas, impact on marginalized groups and understanding of human rights. Additionally, they also research the technology that sustains the media, and the social and political context in which it operates. This approach enables them to offer innovative solutions to key contemporary issues such as fake news, coverage of politics, democratic function of journalists, mediatisation of the political process and policy debates, role of media in social inequalities, social media, and its impact on politics, challenges in unsupported claims-making, abuse of public figures or ordinary citizens, and the impact of digital media on young people, society, culture, and politics.

The Media, Politics and Society research group is currently focused on the following research areas: media, human rights, immigration, and international politics; communication and the moral and economic questions of technology; online tools for political communication; gendered nature of mediated politics; social, cultural, and political impacts of digital media; children, young people, and the media; global news media, and international journalism.
