History of Architecture and the Built Environment Research Group
Description
The History of Architecture and the Built Environment Research Group is open to all with an interest in the subject: staff, students at any level, and staff/members of organisations involved in managing and shaping the historic built environment in Edinburgh, Scotland, and beyond. The Group’s events bring together academic historians and practitioners, and members have strong links with external organisations including Historic Environment Scotland, Docomomo Scotland, and the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. They carry out collaborative research, and work closely with the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies, also based at the University of Edinburgh.
Current externally funded research projects undertaken by members of the group include:
- a three-year study of Edwardian architecture (funded by the Leverhulme Trust, 2018-21)
- a study of Scottish architecture's links to slavery (funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh)
- a major collaborative project examining Scottish new towns between the 1940s and the present day (funded by the Leverhulme Trust, 2021-23)
- research on the post-war work of Peter Moro and Partners (funded by the Paul Mellon Centre and the John S Cohen Foundation, 2018-20)
- a study of ideas of 'community' and citizenship in post-war British architecture and planning (funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust, 2020-22)
- a project examining European writing on the art and architecture of the United States, 1945-90 (funded by the Terra Foundation)
The Group’s flagship series is the Architectural History and Theory Research Seminar, which is organised in conjunction with the MSc Architectural History and Theory programme. Founded in 2015, more than sixty seminars have taken place with speakers from around the world. The seminar is open to all with an interest in the subject. Other recent events include a conference on the Edinburgh New Town and New Towns in Scotland, organised in conjunction with University of Picardy Jules Verne and other partners. Members were involved in the organisation of the 2021 European Architectural History Network Conference, which took place in Edinburgh.
