Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (SCCS)
Description
Based in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and established in 1990, the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (SCCS) is the University of Edinburgh’s specialist research and teaching unit on architectural conservation and built heritage.
Seeking to bridge the gulf between ‘heritage’ and ‘new’ architecture, SCCS research encompasses both a critical discussion of contemporary architecture, and an exploration of the history of the Modern Movement, especially in the areas of mass housing and urban development, which is innovatively researched at local, regional and global levels.
SCCS pursues a wide range of public engagement activities in collaboration with external organisations and funding bodies, and provides advice and expertise to industry partners in a number of areas and at a range of scales, from Heritage Impact Assessments and Conservation Area Appraisals, to Listed Building Consent.
SCCS is home to ECA’s highly-regarded Architectural Conservation - MSc programme, the longest-established graduate historic preservation course in these islands. With students coming to Edinburgh from all over the world, and from a wide range of backgrounds, the programme exemplifies both interdisciplinarity and internationalism. SCCS students have produced an extensive catalogue of outstanding dissertations in the discipline.
SCCS annual series of Architectural Conservation Masterclasses feature leading international figures from a wide spectrum of disciplines and are a recognised pathway for Continuous Professional Development.
The Centre also runs conferences, seminars, exhibitions and bespoke training events in collaboration with partner organisations, including DOCOMOMO, Edinburgh World Heritage, the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
