Centre for French and Francophone Research

Description

The Centre for French and Francophone Research provides a showcase for the diversity of French and Francophone studies in a global context across several disciplines at UCL, including literary studies, history, philosophy, art history, anthropology, global health, and the physical sciences.

Established in 2022, The Centre provides a showcase for the diversity of French and Francophone studies in a global context across several disciplines at UCL.

The goal is to create a space for researchers and students from across the university broadly interested in the French-speaking world to share their work and to promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Centre also has a public mission to facilitate a dialogue between a London audience and the (French-speaking) world, calling on francophone voices to weigh in on questions preoccupying the Anglophone world and bringing innovations in French thought to the attention of a London public. Perhaps just as importantly, London is itself one of the great centres of French language and cultures, with an estimated population of over a quarter million French speakers. The Centre can play an important role in bringing together this multifaceted French-speaking community through linked programming with museums, libraries, and performing arts centres.

Finally, as the public face of French and Francophone research within the UCL community, the Centre liaises with academic departments and other Area Studies Centres, such as the European Institute, African Studies Research Centre, Centre for the Study of South Asia and the Indian Ocean, and the Institute of the Americas, as well as the Bartlett’s Urban Lab, in order to promote and engage with the interdisciplinarity of French and Francophone research at UCL.
