IGSD conducts meticulous research across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences to comprehend significant global problems. Through its teaching, it provides current and prospective leaders and citizens with the skills to address these challenges. IGSD is committed to achieving research excellence, marked by critical self-reflection, theoretical and empirical rigour, and comprehensive analysis. However, it does not pursue excellence in isolation. Instead, its excellence is characterised by three distinct features.
IGSD believes in the power of cooperative efforts for change. Its researchers, of different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, are dedicated to various forms of engagement with global sustainable development. It values partnerships with diverse stakeholders, such as local communities, NGOs, businesses, policy-makers, academic funders, foundations, and international bodies, including numerous UN agencies. Acknowledging the colonial roots of development, IGSD actively seeks novel, decolonised methods of cooperation.
The institute upholds academic freedom and its crucial role in challenging authority. It aims for constructive criticism and engages its partners in honest, frank, and wise discussions. It recognises the need for diverse knowledge in shaping understanding and works to amplify underrepresented voices.
IGSD believes in the transformative power of research. It employs a range of approaches to co-design research agendas and projects, disseminating findings in ways that enable their use by policy-makers, businesses, NGOs, and communities. Working alongside its partners, it strives for impactful research conducted in an inclusive, decolonised, and engaged manner, with the aim of transforming communities, understanding, and the world.
