Centre for Alternatives to Social and Economic Inequalities

Description

The Centre for Alternatives to Social and Economic Inequalities is based in the Sociology Department at Lancaster University and thinks globally and acts locally in researching the causes of, and offering solutions to, a range of inequalities.

There are alternatives to these challenges and members are committed to producing and practicing them.

The Centre is an inter-disciplinary venture across Lancaster University which connects with collaborators in Lancaster and across Morecambe Bay.

Research is organised around four main themes:

Boundaries This theme focuses on bounded inequalities by space, place and time and builds upon significant international expertise within the Department in the following areas:

  • Mobilities
  • Migration
  • Decolonisation

Global Inequalities continue to shape the lived experience of the modern world. Understanding and acting to counteract them is essential for the future of the planet. This theme consolidates existing research reputations in a range of inequalities:

  • Political economy
  • Global
  • Climate

Intersectionalities Lancaster University has an international reputation in studying and challenging intersectional inequalities. The Centre uses this expertise to develop thinking in a number of areas:

  • Gender
  • Health
  • Social

Representations This theme encompasses knowledge on culture, media and digital technology which encompass inequalities as well as reimagining and realising alternatives. This relates to existing expertise and research strengths across the University including:

  • Media and Culture
  • Digital Technology
  • Alternatives
