Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP)
Description
The Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy was founded in 1994 at Middlesex University, London, and transfered to Kingston University London in 2010. It is internationally recognised as the leading centre for postgraduate-level study and doctoral research in continental philosophy in the UK. Its work is characterised by an emphasis on broad cultural and intellectual contexts and a distinctive sense of social and political engagement. This is based in critical study of the history of philosophy from the standpoint of the present.
In the Research Excellence Framework exercise of 2021, Philosophy at Kingston was ranked 6th in UK on the quality of its Research Outputs: with 47% of its outputs judged at the highest grade of 'world-leading'. 88% of Philosophy outputs submitted and 88% of its Research Environment were judged to be either World-leading or Internationally Excellent.
The Centre runs a PhD programme, a two-year MPhilStud in Philosophy and three MA programmes: Modern European Philosophy, Aesthetics and Art Theory, and Philosophy and Contemporary Critical Theory. There are normally 30 to 40 MA students and 30 to 35 PhD students enrolled in the Centre’s programmes at any one time.
Members participate in a wide range of research events, and the Centre also hosts a regular series of research seminars, workshops and international conferences.
The Centre’s alumni work in a wide range of university disciplines and in art and other cultural institutions both in the UK and across Europe.
