Political Ecology, Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services (PEBES)
Description
The Political Ecology, Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services (PEBES) research group provides a collaborative focus for the Geography Department's work at King's College London on environmental conservation, the social (re)production of nature and resource management. It builds on two traditions in the Department: one in critical political ecology and the other a more biodiversity and policy-oriented focus on natural capital and ecosystem services mapping, monitoring and modelling. It names as its anticipated key themes different approaches to biodiversity conservation (for example ecosystem services and nature-based solutions); the relationship between the governance and management of environmental resources and development; and political ecology and the financialisation of nature and natural capital.
Its members' research covers methods of assessing ecosystem services from local to global scales, including policy support tools; the relationships between development and resource management, with a critical approach to resource politics and policy; the financialisation of nature; political ecology as a critical framework for understanding infrastructural futures, in research on dam infrastructure, energy democracy and plumbing poverty; and nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation. King's Geography lists it among its key research groups, and it names the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) as a partner.
