UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC)
ActiveDescription
The UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is a centre with both professional services and academic missions, launched on 1 August 2021. It aims to provide a place for UCL’s different academic disciplines to come together and collaborate on the methods and approaches of computational science and digital scholarship, and to be the home for the supercomputers, datasets, software and people that make computational science and digital scholarship possible.
It provides digital research infrastructure to research groups in UCL and beyond, and is a laboratory for research, teaching and innovation in compute, data and software intensive research methods. It is a home for research technology professionals (data scientists, research software engineers, research infrastructure developers, data stewards and research managers) who support and collaborate in the delivery of team-based UCL research. Its primary engagement method is adding its research professionals to teams on sponsored grants, and it can help in other ways, from free drop-in advice sessions to long-term research collaborations, technical supervision for research staff, or help with writing the technical sections of proposals. It covers all fields, with specialist subgroups dedicated to particular research domains or technology areas. It develops staff and student digital research capabilities through teaching collaborations and training opportunities, and helps to convene UCL’s community of computational scientists and digital research professionals.
Its news reports that it has built its first Ethernet-based system, blending bare metal and virtualisation to give researchers, from physicists to arts and humanities scholars, far more flexibility in how they work. The Digital Skills in Arts and Humanities Network (DISKAH), coordinated at the University of Brighton, names it among its partners.
