Description

The Future Places Centre (FPC) at Lancaster University was a Digital Economy Centre on understanding places through everyday computing, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council from 2020. It built on the University’s projects on pervasive computing, the Internet of Things and the natural environment, on futures thinking and on data science, and its research agendas were built on co-creation methodologies with its partners. Its work ran across three themes: Natural Environment, Built Environment and Healthy Living. Its activities included a writer in residence, an environmental essay and poetry prize, the 2022 conference Reimagining Landscape: Environment Communication and the Humanities, and the Arnside Lectures. The centre held its closing celebration on 9 July 2025, presented with the University’s School of Arts.
