Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit, Salford (SHUSU)
Description
Established in 1996, the Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) is a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Salford hosted within the Centre for Research on Inclusive Society. It seeks to understand complex social issues and work towards social justice and environmental sustainability. It engages in research that highlights the processes, outcomes and impacts of marginalisation on individuals and communities, and its work is aligned with four work streams: Housing and Neighbourhoods; Migration and Integration; Sustainability and Society; and Work and Welfare. The challenges it names include fair access to housing, equitable welfare systems and services, population mobility, ageing populations, environmental sustainability and inclusive growth. Its projects have used creative methods, including photography and found poetry taken from resident interviews. It is a founder and steering group member of the Fuel Poverty Research Network, and a member of the support committee of the Cycling and Society Research Network.
