Bakhita Centre for Slavery, Safety and Social Justice
ActiveDescription
The Bakhita Centre for Slavery, Safety and Social Justice at St Mary’s University, Twickenham conducts research on slavery, safety and social justice. Its mission is to produce applied research that informs practice and policy through partnerships with academics, practitioners and people with lived experience. Its five themes are modern slavery, human trafficking/international, safety, social justice and philosophies of freedom. The centre grew out of the Centre for the Study of Modern Slavery, opened at St Mary’s in 2015, and launched under the Bakhita name in February 2021, in honour of St Josephine Bakhita. Its projects list a PGCert Independent Modern Slavery Advocate, developed in partnership with Hope for Justice and the Snowdrop Project, and a three-year music therapy study at Caritas Bakhita House, whose report was launched in September 2026.
