Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (SANT)

Active

Description

The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne describes itself as the country's oldest provincial antiquarian society. In the two centuries since it was founded in 1813, it has encouraged a deeper understanding of the history and archaeology of North East England. The society reports a library of over 30,000 books and journals, on the second floor of the Great North Museum: Hancock and open to the public, and its large archives are deposited at Northumberland Archives. Its journal, Archaeologia Aeliana, first published in 1822, covers all aspects of the history of North-East England, from archaeology (including excavation reports) and buildings to historical and documentary research, and from prehistory to the present, and all papers are refereed by at least one external, anonymous reviewer. The society runs a lecture programme, offers small research grants with two deadlines a year, is a partner in the management of Newcastle Castle, and organises the ten-yearly Pilgrimage of Hadrian's Wall in conjunction with the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.
