Needham Research Institute, Cambridge (NRI)
ActiveDescription
The Needham Research Institute (NRI) is a centre for the study of the history of science, technology and medicine in East Asia. It is the home of the Science and Civilisation in China project and houses the East Asian History of Science Library, and its mission is to create a wider understanding of the historical contribution of the people of China, Japan and Korea to the scientific and technical culture of humankind, through research, publication and public outreach. The institute facilitates the publication of the Science and Civilisation in China series as well as a monograph series, hosts a regular Friday seminar during term-time as well as larger workshops, and conducts research projects centred on its archival collections, which hold the notes, letters and other materials assembled during the writing of Science and Civilisation in China. Scholars from around the world are based there for periods ranging from a few months to three years, including on fellowships the institute offers, and the library reports holding about 40,000 titles. The NRI, formerly the East Asian History of Science Trust, is a registered charity governed by a board of trustees and is situated in West Cambridge, in the grounds of Robinson College.
