FLARE Foreign Law Research
Description
FLARE, the Foreign Law Research group of libraries, is a collaboration between the major libraries collecting foreign law in the United Kingdom: the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (Chair), the Bodleian Law Library, the Squire Law Library, the British Library and SOAS, University of London. The Institute's page for the group says that it is working to improve the coverage and accessibility of foreign legal materials at the national level and to raise expertise in their use. FLARE grew out of the FLAG project, in which the Institute Library worked with the Bodleian Law Library, the Squire Law Library and SOAS, University of London to develop the FLAG Foreign Law Guide to help researchers locate primary foreign law print collections in UK libraries, and which highlighted the importance of continued co-operation among the major UK libraries with foreign law collections. It aims to develop collaborative collection policies, improve access to foreign, comparative and international law and increase the expertise of library staff by providing information and training courses in the collection, management and exploitation of these materials. A FLARE research guides page links to research guides from the Bodleian Law Library, the IALS Library, the Inner Temple Library, the SOAS Library and the Squire Law Library, and the group advised the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies on the development of the Flare Index to Treaties.
