Birkbeck Research Centre for Environment and Sustainability (BRCES)

Active

Description

The Birkbeck Research Centre for Environment and Sustainability (BRCES) was formed in December 2023 and takes an interdisciplinary approach to tackling the entwined challenges of environmental and climate breakdown and the need to transition to a more sustainable way of life. Academic colleagues from across Birkbeck work together in the centre, including arts and humanities and social science approaches alongside more scientific research. Its home page says that environment and sustainability research at Birkbeck involves staff in all three faculties, from geography and earth sciences to history and linguistics, via business and law. The centre applies this expertise to public discourses including business and consumer sustainability, the politics of food production and distribution, risk and resilience and the interaction between the human and non-human, and approaches the twin climate and environmental crises from critical and cultural perspectives as well as generating data for policy interventions. Projects it highlights include work on animals and the environment in Greek and Roman philosophy, on language and sustainable development, and on household decision making about single-use plastics. It sits within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, is run by a steering group, and aims to build a network of partners and to seek funding for partner-based PhD studentships.
