Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MILA)
ActiveDescription
The Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MILA) is a cross-sector charity bringing together organisations and individuals sharing a common belief in the power of media and information literacy to help people lead happier, healthier, safer and more productive lives. It operated for a couple of years as an informal network, set up initially in October 2021 under the co-sponsorship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the CILIP Information Literacy Group, and was registered as a charity in December 2023. Its mission is to foster collaborations and education that empower everyone in the UK with the lifelong ability to reach and express discerning views about the information and media that they use, share and create, and it addresses that mission by working and partnering with stakeholders in multiple sectors. The charity reports that it advances education and knowledge about media and information literacy in the UK through the facilitation of research, the collaborative development of relevant resources and advocacy. It commissioned a review of research about the impact of information literacy on society, undertaken at Edinburgh Napier University and published in November 2023, and with First News it has produced frameworks for teaching media and information literacy in primary and secondary schools.
