UCL Centre for Holocaust Education

Description

The UCL Centre for Holocaust Education was established in 2008 by a founding grant from Pears Foundation and the Department for Education, and is part of the UCL Institute of Education. Originally known as the Holocaust Education Development Programme (HEDP), it reports that it was awarded Centre status by the University of London and renamed the Centre for Holocaust Education in 2012. Throughout its history the development of teachers and teaching practice has sat at the very core of its work: through its portfolio of CPD programmes the Centre provides training for teachers in service and in training, and its online Masters module, The Holocaust in the Curriculum, offers funded places to teachers in state-funded schools in England. Its work is informed by its own research: it reports that in 2009 it produced the first national empirical portrait of teaching practices around the Holocaust in England, and its study of students' knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust was published in 2016, followed by further national studies, research briefings and an edited collection published by UCL Press. It also runs the Beacon Schools programme and produces classroom resources.
