Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA)

Description

The Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA) is dedicated to the preservation of and access to Chinese-language independent film culture. It houses a collection of films, associated material culture, publications on Chinese-language independent cinema, and oral history video interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders in the field. Based at Newcastle University and launched in September 2023, CIFA is the major outcome of the AHRC-funded research project Independent Cinema in China: State, Market and Film Culture (2019-2024), and reports that it continues to operate with the support of Newcastle University. It works with scholars and universities around the world to advance the study of Chinese independent cinema, publishes the Chinese Independent Cinema Observer, a bilingual journal, and runs the CIFA Screening and Research Seminar, screenings and exhibitions.
