The International Centre for Intercultural Studies (ICIS) is a research centre in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media at the UCL Institute of Education. The centre promotes interdisciplinary intercultural studies that advance understanding of the role of culture in society, education and communication and inform intercultural practices and policies. Its stated aims include promoting a critical approach to understanding the role of culture in society, education and communication; developing a critical mass of inquiry in researching and teaching culture, foregrounding the research strand of language learning, language use and intercultural communication; developing international networks through affiliated learned societies, joint projects, seminars, networking activities, conferences, student exchanges and programme partnerships; and engaging with and influencing national and international language-in-education policy and debates on intercultural collaboration and exchange. The centre was originally founded in 1979 as the Centre for Multicultural Education, and its focus on intercultural education and the study of diversity, equity and social justice remains one of the key strands of its current activities. Its research asks what globalisation, migration, changing geopolitics and the Covid pandemic mean for intercultural studies, how intercultural studies can contribute to the decolonisation agenda in education and society, and what the perks and perils are of intercultural encounters mediated through digital technology. The centre runs a seminar series each academic year.
