Ageing Playfully Network

Description

Ageing Playfully is an interdisciplinary network that gathers academic researchers, community organisations and corporate actors together to explore the role of play and games in older people’s lives. The network is inspired by a growing academic awareness that play and games are particularly productive sites through which to understand and generate wellbeing in old age. It aims to serve as a hub for those interested in playful ageing, coalescing current research and inspiring future research agendas, encouraging knowledge exchange, driving technological and industry innovation, and informing public policy around healthy ageing and care. The Ageing Playfully project began in 2020 and was later granted funds from UCL to create the network, which includes scholars from a wide variety of disciplines at UCL and beyond, including the social sciences, humanities, brain sciences, and life and medical sciences. It seeks to provide an evidence base for the health effects of play in old age, to inform programming and policy on care and community services for older people, and to offer more reflective, nuanced and holistic images of ageing. The events listed on its pages cover activity provision in care homes, virtual reality in care homes and clowning as a method of care; the network held a symposium in June 2021.
