The Marxism in Culture seminar series was conceived in 2002 to provide a forum for those committed to the continuing relevance of Marxism for cultural analysis. It was set up in the aftermath of the international conference Marxism and the Visual Arts Now, held at UCL in April that year. Both Marxism and culture are conceived in a broad sense: Marxism as an ongoing self-critical tradition whose own history and premises are themselves open to critique, and culture as comprehending the traditional fine arts and aspects of popular culture such as film, popular music and fashion. The seminar welcomes contributions concerned primarily with principles and methods as well as those focused on the interpretation of particular cultural practices, historical or contemporary. It is convened by twelve academics from eight institutions. Formerly held at the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies, which closed in July 2026, the series is listed for 2026-27 among the seminar series of UCL History of Art, with sessions on Friday evenings at the UCL Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way.
