Research Cluster for Disability, Deafness and Neurodiversity in Architecture

The Research Cluster for Disability, Deafness and Neurodiversity in Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, researches the intersections of disability, deafness and neurodiversity within the built environment and works to advance disability praxis in architectural education, scholarship and beyond. The cluster works on outward-reaching interdisciplinary research and network building, engaging with students, staff, external disability-led organisations and international scholars. It describes a new field of inquiry that draws on critical disability studies, anthropology, and science, society and technology studies, and explores how disability is experienced, produced and understood both spatially and socially. Devised in collaboration with disabled practitioners and organisations, its outputs foreground current research, pedagogy and design practices on the intersections of diverse bodyminds and the built environment within and beyond the academic institution and the official archive. They include a guest-edited special issue of arq: Architectural Research Quarterly (volume 28, issue 3). In May and June 2026 the cluster held an inaugural series of two online seminars and two workshops, on Crip and Civic Pedagogies and on Disabling the Archive, conceived and developed as a collaboration between the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Royal Danish Academy’s Centre for Spatial Inclusion and funded by the School’s Just Environments Incubator. The School describes the cluster as intended as a long-term, internationally connected centre.
