UCL Anthropocene
ActiveDescription
UCL Anthropocene describes itself as a virtual school, assembling projects, people, courses and events from across the social sciences, arts, humanities, life, environmental and health sciences to articulate and address the problems that the Anthropocene poses for the collective future. The initiative grows out of work within UCL’s Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences and calls itself a workshop for rethinking disciplines and their constitutive relations in response to a concrete and urgent set of questions. It is led by four co-convenors, from Geography, History, Anthropology and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society. Its own seminar series have included Anthropocene Histories, a partnership seminar series with the Institute of Historical Research; Writers of the Anthropocene, which looks at the Anthropocene through the lens of different literary genres; and Cultural Ecology, eight weekly events with researchers from art history, fine art, curating, architecture, dance, music, literature, poetry, film and photography. The initiative held its inaugural seminar series in June 2020 and, with UCL Health, Mind and Society, has offered small grants of up to £500 to early career and postgraduate researchers.
