The UCL Research Institute for Collections (RIC) is a virtual centre for scholarship, pedagogy and impact based around UCL’s collections. It was founded in 2021 to foster research synergies centred on the library, museum, gallery and departmental collections held in UCL by bringing together curatorial and academic expertise. The institute is overseen by a management committee formed of representatives from UCL Library Services, UCL Museums and Collections, UCL’s academic body and external expert advisors. The collections it works with include UCL Art Collections, the Grant Museum of Zoology, the Pathology Collections, the Petrie Collection and the Science Collections, together with UCL Special Collections. Each year the institute awards fellowships of £5,000 for research on these collections: the Liberating the Collections Fellowship and the Special Collections Visiting Fellowship were introduced in December 2022, and a Museum Collections Visiting Fellowship followed for the 2025 round. It also supports research projects and events based on the collections, and held a public soft launch in May 2023.
