Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is the Pan-European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences. Its object is the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world, for the public benefit and the advancement of education, in Europe. Membership is by invitation only, made after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation of scholarship and eminence. The Academy reports 6,019 members as of September 2026 in four classes, of which the Humanities and Arts class holds 1,440. It is registered in England and Wales as a charity and a company, with its London Support Office at Senate House, University of London, and its headquarters in Munich.
