Migrant Futures Institute (MFI)

Active

Description

The Migrant Futures Institute (MFI) is an academic hub at Goldsmiths, University of London, dedicated to reshaping the discourse and practices surrounding migration. Growing out of an established international network of researchers, creatives and community leaders, it sets out to challenge conventional approaches to migration by integrating art, creative practices, and community engagement into its research methodologies. Unlike conventional migration studies, which often focus solely on policy development through legal and social scientific lenses, the institute says it embraces a multidisciplinary approach that acknowledges the complexities and nuances of migration experiences and foregrounds migrant intellectual lives and creative endeavours.

The institute's mission extends beyond academia to actively engage with civil society, both locally and globally. Through research, enterprise and creative practice, it aims to provide a platform for people to critically engage with migration issues, challenge existing paradigms, and envision migrant futures. Goldsmiths announced a grant from the Oak Foundation to establish the institute in May 2025, and its activities have included postdoctoral fellowships, doctoral studentships, exhibitions, film screenings and an open call to artists.
